About SMILE Kenya: A Legacy of Love and Empowerment
SMILE Kenya isn’t just a development charity; it’s a tribute, a legacy, and a heartfelt connection to a shared past and a brighter future. It all began with my father, John Band, whose tales of his time in Mombasa during his National Service in 1960 painted vivid pictures of white sandy beaches, exotic temperatures, and encounters with wild animals. Those stories, cherished memories from my childhood, laid the foundation for something extraordinary.
Nearly two decades ago, my wife Beck and I embarked on a journey of sponsorship with Compassion UK, focusing our efforts on children living in poverty in Kenya. Inspired by my father’s connection to the region, we chose two projects in Kinango, near Mombasa, and one in Malindi, further up the coast. Over the years, we’ve sponsored 21 children, witnessing their remarkable transformation from struggling youths to thriving young adults, breaking free from the shackles of poverty and reaching for their dreams.
Among these children was Charo Tsuma, a bright and humble soul from Kinango. Charo’s journey, from poverty to the brink of graduation from Egerton University, is nothing short of remarkable. He’s an embodiment of resilience, faith, and a burning desire to give back to his community. With the knowledge gained from his education, Charo founded Climate Care CBO along with three other members to uplift local farmers and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
With limited resources, Charo and his team have achieved remarkable results. They’ve expanded their membership to 30 individuals, predominantly young men like himself, and have already made significant strides in their mission. Through tree planting projects, chicken and duck rearing initiatives, and water and waste management efforts, Climate Care CBO is transforming Kinango’s farming community. They’ve also played a pivotal role in educating local farmers about modern agricultural practices, sharing their surplus produce to ensure food security for all.
As fate would have it, my father passed away in October 2023, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and service. In his honour, and inspired by Charo’s vision, SMILE Kenya was born. Our mission is clear: to support Charo and Climate Care CBO in their efforts to transform Kinango through modern agriculture, lifting the community out of poverty and fostering sustainable development.
Charo’s enthusiasm for our shared vision was palpable. Together, we crafted plans, prepared budgets, and laid the groundwork for SMILE Kenya’s inaugural projects. With official registration and a bank account in place, we are poised to make a tangible difference in Kinango and beyond.
In March 2024, we’ll embark on a journey to Kenya, eager to witness the fruits of our labour and to stand alongside Charo and Climate Care CBO as they embark on their transformative projects. We’ll also visit the Compassion projects in Kinango and Malindi, where the cycle of hope and empowerment continues for a new generation.
At just 23 years old, Charo’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and the unwavering support of a community united in purpose. And as we look to the future, we are filled with hope and determination to make a lasting impact through SMILE Kenya.
Join us on this incredible journey as we honour the past, empower the present, and create a brighter future for generations to come. Together, we can make smiles that last a lifetime.
Warm regards, Matt & Beck Band
