In October 2024, York Vikings Rotary member Mick Fox, along with his son Peter, embarked on an extraordinary journey that combined physical endurance with a philanthropic mission. Their goal was to trek to Mount Everest Base Camp, not just for personal achievement, but to raise crucial funds for Smile Kenya.
Honoring a Legacy and Supporting Global Causes
The trek was in honor of John Band, whose impactful National Service in Mombasa inspired the initiative. Through Smile Kenya, Mick and Peter partnered with Climate Care CBO to support transformative agricultural projects in Kinango, Kenya. The funds raised were aimed at providing essential resources like water infrastructure, poultry, seeds, and comprehensive support to nurture sustainable development.
Additionally, the journey celebrated the Mondo Foundation’s 20th anniversary, supporting its impactful projects in Nepal, Uganda, and Tanzania.
A Challenging Yet Rewarding Trek
The 14-day trek from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp, reaching 5,300 meters, included key stops at Lukla, Namche Bazaar, and Dingboche. Mick and Peter faced demanding acclimatization hikes to Gong Ri (4,000m) and Nagarjun Hill (5,360m). Each step was taken with the knowledge that their efforts would contribute to positive change across multiple communities in Africa and Asia.
A Call to Support and Action
The success of Mick and Peter’s journey was powered by the support and generosity of many. Their story is a testament to the impact of community spirit and the power of service. We invite you to continue supporting initiatives like these, turning compassion into tangible action.
Congratulations to Mick and Peter for their remarkable achievement and dedication to making a difference!
