These efforts are central to ClimateCare’s mission of fostering community development, environmental stewardship, and sustainable livelihoods. This report provides a detailed overview of the activities conducted during the month, highlighting key outcomes and future steps.
1. Youth Journalism Seminar in Kinango Overview.
A two-week seminar was organized in Kinango, aimed at training adolescents as young journalists. The primary goal was to equip them with the skills to identify and report on local community issues through radio shows, thereby fostering community engagement and advocacy.
Facilitation
Peter Nyawa from ClimateCare CBO was specially invited to facilitate the seminar, leveraging his extensive expertise in environmental communication and community engagement. His role was pivotal in enhancing the quality and impact of the training sessions.
Objectives:
- To teach adolescents the fundamentals of journalism, including ethics, reporting techniques, and radio show production.
- To enable young people to identify, report on, and broadcast local community issues.
- To provide practical, hands-on experience in creating and presenting radio shows.
Key Activities:
- Training Sessions:Participants were educated on journalism ethics, the essentials of reporting, and the technical aspects of radio show production. This foundational knowledge was crucial in preparing them to take on roles as community reporters.
Practical Workshops:
- The seminar included workshops where participants applied their newly acquired skills to create and present their radio programs. These sessions were designed to provide practical experience and reinforce the training content.
Guest Speakers:
- Alongside Peter Nyawa, other experts in communication and media were invited to share insights on how effective communication can drive community impact. These sessions inspired the participants and broadened their understanding of the role of media in society.
Youth Involvement in Environmental Conservation
As the seminar concluded, ClimateCare CBO facilitated a tree-planting activity involving the youth. This initiative not only reinforced the importance of environmental conservation but also provided the participants with a tangible way to contribute to their community. The involvement of ClimateCare and the integration of environmental activities, such as tree planting, added significant value to the training, ensuring that the youth are not only equipped with journalistic skills but also with a sense of environmental and social responsibility.
2. Feathers of Hope Project Kickoff Project Overview
The Feathers of Hope (FoH) project kick started in Kinango in August, marking the beginning of a significant initiative aimed at improving local livelihoods through sustainable poultry farming. The initial focus was on preparing the site and laying the groundwork for the project’s infrastructure.
Key Activities:
- Fencing:The month began with the purchasing of fencing materials, followed by the hiring of labor to dig holes and mount poles. Barbed wire and chain-link fencing were then installed, securing the area designated for the project. This was a crucial first step in establishing the project’s physical boundaries and ensuring the safety of the poultry.

Poultry House Construction:

- Following the fencing, efforts shifted to identifying and preparing the area for the construction of the first poultry house structure. This included digging holes, setting up posts, and framing the house. The construction of this structure is essential for the project’s operational phase, where it will house the poultry and serve as the main hub for the farming activities.
Training Completion
Charo, a key team member, successfully completed a three-month training program at Haller Farm earlier in the month. The training provided Charo with advanced knowledge and skills in sustainable farming practices, which will be invaluable as the Feathers of Hope project progresses. His return marks a significant enhancement to the team’s capacity to implement the project effectively.

Next Steps:
1. Completion of the First Poultry House:
- The immediate focus will be on completing the construction of the first poultry house. This will involve finishing the framing, adding the roofing, installing the necessary fixtures, and ensuring the structure is fully functional and ready to house the poultry.
2. Initiating Construction of the Next Poultry House:
- Once the first poultry house is completed, the team will begin constructing the next one. This phased approach will ensure that the infrastructure is built systematically, allowing for smooth scaling of the project.
3. Ordering Chicks and Feeds:
- As the poultry houses near completion, orders for chicks and feeds will be placed. This will ensure that the project can start its operations promptly after the infrastructure is ready, minimizing delays and ensuring the timely growth of the poultry farming operations.
Conclusion
The kickoff of the Feathers of Hope project in August was marked by significant progress, laying a strong foundation for the upcoming phases. The completion of the fencing and the initiation of the poultry house construction are critical milestones. With Charo’s newly acquired expertise, the project is well-positioned for success, promising to deliver substantial benefits to the Kinango community through sustainable agriculture.
