Monthly Report Update: October 2024

Feathers of Hope (FOH) Project October Monthly Report

Overview

October was a significant month for the FOH Project, with several milestones achieved in line with our commitment to sustainable poultry farming and community empowerment. Key activities included construction, renewable energy integration, and feed sustainability initiatives. However, the month was not without challenges, particularly in water availability, which necessitated adaptive measures to sustain operations.

1. Construction and Completion of the Second Poultry Structure

  • The second poultry structure was successfully constructed and completed, it is a mud structure reinforced with cement.
  • This structure will provide additional capacity to house more chicken.

2. Partnership Agreement with St. Joseph Church

  • ClimateCare CBO formalized a partnership with St. Joseph Church for access to their borehole water.
  • This agreement secures a critical resource for the project and aligns with plans to pipe water to the Dzitenge community, addressing broader community needs.

3. Solar Power System Installation

A solar power system was purchased and installed to mitigate the challenges of unreliable electricity and high costs.

The system powers key operations, including lighting, incubation, and equipment, ensuring uninterrupted functionality.

To secure the investment, the system was enclosed in a protective cage.

4. Routine Chick Management and Vaccination

Daily activities, including feeding, cleaning, and health monitoring, were carried out consistently.
Vaccination programs were executed as scheduled, maintaining optimal poultry health and productivity.

5. Azolla Pond Set-Up

Azolla ponds were established, seeded, and equipped with shade nets to promote sustainable feed production.
This initiative aims to reduce feeding costs and enhance the project’s environmental sustainability.

Challenges Faced

  1. Water Scarcity:
o Water availability emerged as a critical challenge this month, with taps running dry for prolonged periods.
o To sustain operations, particularly during the construction of the second poultry structure and routine poultry management, we had to purchase significantly more water than usual.
  2. Solar System Logistics:
o Minor delays were encountered during the installation and securing of the solar system. However, these were resolved efficiently.

Outcomes Achieved
o Enhanced infrastructure with the completion of a second poultry structure, increasing capacity and operational efficiency.
o Greater energy reliability through the installation of a solar power system.
o Progress in sustainable feeding practices with the successful establishment of Azolla ponds.
o Strengthened partnerships and resource sharing through the agreement with St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Next Steps
o Monitor solar system performance to optimize energy efficiency.
o Evaluate Azolla pond productivity and scale up as necessary.
o Continue scaling the FOH Model Farm Project by introducing additional sustainable practices and addressing critical resource gaps.

Conclusion
Despite facing significant challenges, particularly with water scarcity, the FOH Project achieved key milestones in October. These achievements underline our commitment to sustainability and community empowerment. As we move forward, addressing water resource challenges will be a priority to ensure the continuity and growth of the project.
